Swine Flu Questions Answered - Update
Following the recent media reports, the following scenarios should provide you with
some assistance when dealing with questions related to swine flu:-
Cancellation
What if the policyholder or a member of the travelling party is unfit to travel due to swine flu? |
The policy will provide cover for cancellation if the policyholder or a member of the travelling party has been diagnosed by a Medical Practitioner with having contracted swine flu at the date of outward travel |
What if the airline/ferry/rail company (carrier) refuses a policyholder to board the aircraft/ferry/train due to suspected swine flu and is subsequently diagnosed with swine flu? |
A letter from the airline/ferry/train company must be obtained stating boarding was refused due to suspected swine flu. Claims will only be considered where a Medical Practitioner advises someone not to travel on medical grounds and it is confirmed in writing that cancellation of the trip is medically necessary. |

What if the airline/ferry/rail company (carrier) refuses a policyholder to board the aircraft/ferry/train due to suspected swine flu and is subsequently confirmed as fit to travel? |
Claims will not be considered unless a Medical Practitioner advises someone not to travel on medical grounds and it is confirmed in writing that cancellation of the trip is medically necessary. The customer should therefore contact their airline/ferry/train company to transfer their tickets to the next available flight/ferry/train. |
What if a close family member contracts Swine Flu ? |
Claims will be considered on the same basis as any other claim for cancellation for the same reason (i.e. illness of close family member). The policy wording defines 'immediate family' and the important thing is whether the cancellation is reasonable and/or necessary. We are mindful that the media attention that this virus is receiving and is naturally causing high anxiety - however claims will be assessed as whether he cancellation is reasonable and / or necessary. For example we wouldn't normally consider it necessary for a party to cancel a holiday if, say, a brother in law contracted ('normal') flu. |
Medical
What if the policyholder contracts swine flu whilst abroad and requires medical treatment? |
Cover will be provided under the Medical Expenses section for any emergency medical costs associated with the illness, including additional accommodation and flight/ferry/train costs, all subject to approval by the Emergency Medical Assistance Company. The policy will be automatically extended in the event that the policyholder is unable to return home as planned. |
