Mind The Gap Year – the specialist Gap Year and Backpacker Insurance provider clarifies Insurance cover for Swine Flu
For those currently travelling
If you suffer from Swine Flu whilst travelling, any associated emergency medical and curtailment costs will be covered in the normal way.
Travel against FCO/red24 advice
If you travel to a country against FCO/red 24 advice, issued before you start your travel, there will be no provision under your insurance for medical expenses for this flu. There is however cover for unrelated events.
Cancellation cover explained
Provided you have booked travel and insurance before the FCO/red24 advice was given Mind The Gap Year insurance covers the cost of cancellation. An extract of the policy is shown below:-
TRAVEL WARNING
If you travel to a country or an area within a country which red24 has advised against
travelling to in their daily email reports, we will not pay for loss, damage or injury
under this policy.
We will however pay any costs of cancellation under Section 4.

We will pay …. if you cancel or curtail your trip following:
(vii) a warning issued by red24 that a country or countries you had intended to
travel to should be avoided or they have advised against travel, provided this
warning was issued after you booked insurance [and travel].
